Frequently Asked Questions

What music does the OCC sing?
We sing great music for children’s choirs, including music from the masters (Bach, Britten, etc.) and music from around the world. We sing for the joy of singing!

What happens at OCC rehearsals?
The general plan is:
3:50  Singers arrive, sign in and are ready to sing
4:00  Start in silence and warm up body and voice
4:05  Build musicianship through listening, music reading and performance repertoire
5:10  Perform for parents
5:15  Dismiss

What happens at the OCC audition?
Students will sing “My Country ’Tis of Thee” and will be tested in regards to vocal range, melodic and rhythmic memory, and music literacy skills. Students do not need to bring materials with them. While we accept all singers who audition, students must pass the audition at a more accomplished level to participate in the OCC Honor Choir. Third-grade students who audition will automatically be placed in the OCC Training Choir. All students in the OCC Training Choir may choose to re-audition at the beginning of each semester for possible placement in the OCC Honor Choir.

When and where does the chorus meet?
Rehearsals are at the University of Mississippi Music Building on Mondays, 4-5:15 p.m.

When and where does the Oxford String Project meet?
Rehearsals are at the University of Mississippi Music Building on Tuesdays, 4-5:15 p.m.

How much does it cost?
$80 for the 2019 – 2020 season for OCC. We aim to be affordable for all singers. The cost includes purchasing music and operating costs. Additional costs include a one-time vest purchase, other uniform pieces (if not already owned), and a music workbook (required for some levels).

Do you have a multi-child discount?
We have purposely made our tuition as low as possible and do not have any other discounts available.

Are scholarships available?
A limited number of need-based, anonymous scholarships are available that are provided by donations of interested people.  Please contact us for more information.

Is it only for students in grades 3-6?
Yes.  If a singer or string-player is not in these grades and wishes to participate, please contact us and we will consider each singer on a case-by-case basis.

Are we rehearsing TONIGHT, even though the weather is bad?
We will always rehearse unless the University of Mississippi closes. You can check its status anytime at www.olemiss.edu/emergency/
